Pilates @ Jow Ga
Pilates is a unique body conditioning system designed to build strength and stability of the core, or trunk of the body. Pilates @ Jowga is for everyone from beginners to elite athletes and expecting mothers. We provide Core Training for corporate groups, martial artists and for small groups and individuals from all kinds of backgrounds. A Pilates @ Jowga session is always a balanced workout - we work on developing strength and muscle balance between the front, the back and the sides of the body for ideal postural control.

All of the abdominal muscles are strengthened along with the muscles of the lower back, upper back and buttocks. In practising pilates the muscles supporting the spine, the shoulders, the pelvis and hip joints become stronger and more stable. A typical workout includes upper body, leg work and stability-balance work so that the whole of the body is trained for life. While 2-3 sessions are ideal, remarkably, results will be evident from even a single weekly session.

At Pilates @ Jowga as well as improving core strength you will gain an understanding of your own dynamic postural patterns and how to prevent injuries in daily life and in your sporting and fitness activities.

Pilates History
Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates, a German boxer and gymnast born in 1880. Pilates emigrated to England while a young man but was interred in a British Alien Camp during World War 1. It was here that his talent as a physical trainer came to notice. On the Isle of Man he began work in the rehabilitation of war-injured soldiers. From his work with bed restricted soldiers he developed the Pilates Reformer Bed - rigging up a system of ropes and pulleys attached to bed springs, thus offering a form of resistance training.

Pilates later emigrated to the USA where he opened a highly successful studio in New York. His method was called "Contrology" and only came to be called Pilates quite recently. In New York his method came to the attention of a number of athletes, including boxers and many dancers who found the system highly effective in preventing injuries common to the extreme rigours of their training. His system became well known for building strength at a deep level in the musculature of the trunk or 'the core'. The method taught by Joseph Pilates is often referred to now as New York Pilates.

In Contemporary Pilates systems, as taught at Pilates @ Jowga a number of key postural elements have been modified to reflect current training methods and up-to-date scientific knowledge of body mechanics.
