Pilates and much, much more…
Work smart, not hard to get your body back into shape!
At the Physio Fit Studio you can now do Pilates and a range of other exercise classes, all instructed by a qualified physiotherapist.
The Physio Fit Studio is not like a gym, and it is more than just a Pilates studio. There is no joining fee, no membership contract and you only pay for the term of classes you want to sign up for. You will get the highest quality exercise classes possible at a price that anyone can afford. Class sizes are kept to an absolute minimum to maximize your personal supervision. As a physiotherapist, I can ensure you learn the correct exercise techniques right from the start so you exercise effectively and safely- the smart way!
Pilates was developed last century by Joseph Pilates. The exercise regime concentrates particularly on the core muscles that are responsible for maintaining correct posture and supporting the spine.
At the Physio Fit Studio we offer:
PILATES
We have a range of beginners, intermediate and advanced classes. A mat based exersise regime that focuses on posture, deep stability muscles and flexibility.
BODY BALL’ANCE (Fit ball)
Work on your core strength and deep stability using a more challenging program - a combination of Pilates and Fit Ball exercises.
STRETCH & RELAX
Totally unwind and increase your flexibility using a combination of stretching exercises, breathing and relaxation techniques.
PREGNA’CISE
Exercise classes designed for you to stay fit and healthy during your pregnancy or to get you back in shape after baby has arrived - we certainly focus on pelvic floor and your abdominal muscles.
And if you are not a friend of exercising in a group you could have private sessions instead.
Who benefits from Pilates and more?
People of all ages come to my classes - Male and Female. As a Pilates instructor I have helped lots of people with the following conditions:
Lower back pain and problems including disc injuries
Research shows that the presence of pain causes the deep stability muscles to switch off and stop working. When the pain settles these muscles rarely begin to automatically work again. This is the reason for people having recurring pain. Pilates helps to “wake†up these muscles and once you can activate them we will work to restore their strength.
Hip and knee problems
The hip, knee, ankle and lower back are closely linked from and anatomical and functional perspective. If there is an alignment problem in one area, it can create a problem in another related area. More often then not is a hip or knee problem due to instability in the pelvis and lower back area. Improving core stability can help to correct alignment problems.
Neck problems
Most neck problems are posture related. Neck pain can only be cured long term by improving postural awareness and strengthening the muscles that are necessary to maintain a good posture. People comment all the time how my Pilates classes have made them more aware of their posture and how they find it so much easier to keep their posture, not only because they grew stronger but more so because they are aware of their posture.
Shoulder problems
Most shoulder problems have a component of instability of the shoulder blade on the ribcage. The shoulder blade is the base to which the arm is attached. If the base is instable there are likely to be problems on whatever stands upon. My Pilates exercises are tailored to aim to correct shoulder blade instability.
Pregnancy and wanting to get into shape after
During pregnancy the female body undergoes massive changes to accommodate the growing child. One of these changes includes the posture of the lower back. Frequently it becomes more rounded due to the increasing frontal load. Pilates during pregnancy can improve posture and postural awareness. It also will reduce the amount of muscle inactivity that will naturally occur due to the stretching of muscle during pregnancy. Studies have shown that women how are active during their pregnancy will more likely have an active labour and therefore end up with less complications during delivery.
Why 'Pilates and more...' at the Physio Fit Studio?
Because you want to train safely and get results!
This, however, is strongly dependant on the level of training and experience of your instructor. You have to understand, that you can become a certified Pilates instructor doing a week end course only. The quality of that training is very questionable.
I offer more: I trained as a Physiotherapist 10 years ago in Germany. After coming to Australia I had to pass my board exams to be recognized as a Physiotherapist here. I have therefore done the studies twice before I became a clinical Pilates instructor. It is my physiotherapy background, combined with 10 years of experience and 4 years of experience as a Pilates instructor that will make the difference.
Very often people ring me and ask about prices. What they should enquire about is the experience and the level of training of the instructor. You do get what you pay for!
And it is for a good reason that you can claim all expenses (Introductory as well as the group classes) with your private health fund.
What is a class like?
In my classes you will find a balance between stretching exercises and a workout for all your muscles necessary for good posture and stability. No matter whether the movements are fast or slow, we aim for control of each movement and breathing rhythm. Pilates therefore calls for concentration and focus. This makes the workout quite relaxing. In my classes we mainly do mat based exersises, where most time is spent on the floor using gravity and your own body weight to create resistance and leverage. This makes it a low impact exercise regime.
Pilates classes run for 60 minutes. Fitball and Stretch & Relax classes run for 45 minutes.
What you need to bring?
Please wear something comfortable. Pilates is done barefoot or in socks. I do provide all the equipment (mats, pillows and other tools) you need during a class. Please bring a bottle of water and a towel to lie down over your mat for reasons of hygiene.
Our Studio and treatment rooms are air conditioned.
Initial Assessment/ Introductory session
Before you begin your classes, I will do an assessment to ensure that I totally understand your personal goals and that I am familiar with your medical history. I will check your body's alignment and stability and get to know your strengths, weaknesses and any restrictions you may have so that we can focus on achieving your goals and strengthen the muscles that really need it. At the time of assessment I also introduce you to the concept of using your deep muscles versus the superficial ones. I show you how to find them so you can practice at home before you start you first lesson.
Your first session is a 'one on one' 60 minute consultation. The cost is $65. Private health rebates apply.
The Classes
The classes at the studio run in school terms and you will sign up for a block of about 10 weeks or whatever is left thereof if you are starting later through the term.
Prices are structured to encourage people to do at least 2 classes per week as this is necessary to get the results you are after. Like any other form of exercise Pilates should be done 3-4 times a week for 30-40 minutes.
Do 1 class a week and pay $16 per class. ($160 for the term- 10 classes)
Do 2 classes per week and pay only $12 per class. ($240 for the term- 20 classes)
Do 3 classes per week and pay only $11 per class. ($330 for the term- 30 classes)
You will have to commit to a time that suits you. This is important so we are able to structure the classes, keep classes small and maximise quality supervision.
If you, however can not attend a class, you are able to make up for your missed class within the same term if there is a vacancy in another class.
I don’t know whether Pilates is for me?
Our clinical Pilates classes and all the other exercise sessions (see time table) are suitable for anyone at any level of fitness.
The central aim of 'Pilates and more...' is to
• strengthen and condition the core muscles • to improve stability • to improve posture and coordination
These benefits greatly depend on close supervision- especially when you are a beginner or have health issues i.e. back problems.
