About NSW Weightlifting

The NSW Weightlifting Association is part of the NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS), located at Sydney Olympic Park.

The specialist services ensure that NSWIS athletes have access to leading edge coaching and sports technology while also receiving tailored support to help balance their elite sporting commitments with personal development and a career.

Information

Olympic weightlifting (also called Olympic-style Weightlifting or Weightlifting) is a sport in which participants attempt a maximum weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates.

The two lifts competed are the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk.

Weightlifting is a test of explosive strength. The lifts must be executed fast and with mobility, because of a great range of motion during the lifts. Parts of the lift, however, especially in the clean and jerk, do test for absolute strength, as power is not an issue in executing that part of the lift.

While there are relatively few competitive Olympic lifters, the lifts and their components are commonly used by elite athletes to train for explosive and functional strength.
