Pilates
Pilates is an exercise method which works on your mind, body and spirit. Pilates addresses your body as a whole, not isolating specific areas. It works on both lengthening and strengthening your body. Pilates specifically addresses postural deviations which occur from illness, injury and age. Pilates can be performed on a mat in a group setting or specialised studio equipment in a private or semi-private setting.
Pilates has its own form of breathing which helps to calm your mind and body, creates rhythm and flow, improves your heart and lung health and can also add assistance or challenge when exercising.
Pilates focuses on your postural and smaller muscles groups which often get forgotten about at the gym or other exercise regimes.
Pilates is an exercise method which is complimentary to all other forms of exercise in particular cardiovascular exercise and strength training. You should be performing Pilates on a regular basis to remain pain free, strong and lengthened.
Whilst Pilates tones, strengthens and lengthens your body, you should not rely on it solely to help with fat loss. You still need to incorporate cardiovascular activities which include walking, skipping, running, boxing, cycling, swimming into your fitness program.
Pilates Matwork classes
Pilates Matwork classes are designed mainly for the general population. Often small apparatus is incorporated into the class. Small apparatus includes fitballs, magic circles, foam rollers, resistance bands, dumbbells, ankle weights, wobble boards and stability balls. These classes are suitable for you if you do not have any injuries or major health conditions.
There are timetabled classes or you can get your own group together. You can also have a private session if you prefer.
All classes are graded. Class sizes are generally larger than a Pilates equipment session. One of the attractions of Pilates Matwork exercises is that you can perform them at home.
Pilates Equipment sessions
Pilates equipment sessions are conducted in a private or semi-private environment. You commence with a one on one individual consultation. This is done to assess your body and develop a personalised program for you if you have injuries, major health conditions or just cannot fit into a class timetable. After your initial consultation, you commence working your own program in a private session (one on one) or a semi-private session (one instructor to up to four clients).
Other reasons you may consider a Pilates equipment session:
your body may require more support for your condition
it may be your only option if you cannot get on and off the floor to exercise
the springs provide variable resistance in a workout which can add challenge or provide support
Pilates equipment sessions are more expensive than a Matwork class because you get to use the specialised equipment, you get an individual program which is being updated regularly to help you progress and there is a higher level of supervision from the instructor.
Personal Training and related services
There are many services which fall under the area of personal training. You get your own personalised training to help you meet your health and fitness goals. This may be as simple as trying to lose body fat or training for a specific sports event. You tell me what you need and I will establish the path for you to meet your goals whether it’s strength, cardiovascular, flexibility training or a combination of all.
The major benefit of personal training is that I am there to keep you motivated and on track to help you meet your goals. Also, your training is focused purely on your goals, rather than general goals in a class situation.
Circuit classes
Not only will you feel fitter, stronger and have more energy, you get to have some fun at the same time.
Circuit classes are a very effective for fat burning and cross training. Cross training helps to compliment many other sports helping to improve general fitness and strength.
The class consists of a warm-up of either boxing, skipping, running, hurdles, agility ladders, steps, games and more. Then you move into the Circuit component of the class which consists of a number of strength and cardiovascular exercise stations. You perform the exercise at that particular station for 1 minute, for as hard and fast as you can. Because it is only a minute your mind says ‘OK I can do that’ so you end up pushing yourself harder than you normally would because it’s only for a short period. This results in keeping your heart rate elevated for the majority of the class.
The benefits include:
# Prevention and management of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol
# Prevention and management of osteoporosis
# Management of arthritis
# Management of stress and depression
# Boosts your metabolism to aid with weight loss
# Improves your circulation
# Improves your quality of sleep
# Provides you with a sense of well being
Circuit classes are designed for all fitness levels and are suitable to most people.
Beyond 50 Strength classes
Primarily these classes are aimed to reduce the effects of aging on your muscles and bones once you reach 50 plus years. The benefit to you is to greatly reduce your risk of falling and if you do, that you do not break any bones.
The class begins with a mini-Pilates routine to warm up the body to prepare it for harder exercise.
The next 40 minutes consists of cardiovascular and strength exercises.
Throughout the class you will be taught how to hold and correct your posture and reminded often.
The class finishes off with lots of stretching.

For over three months we have thoroughly endured and enjoyed the rigors of a personal trainer. Lauren is the best anyone could have. I have in the past been an aerobics instructor ... I speak from experience of the industry.
